So hardy is this breed and insensitive to pain that owners will need to be alert to signs of illness. My experience with Ralphy was a lot harder as we toilet trained Ralphy in a top floor flat for the first 5 months of his life. We taught him to use the pads and he became that good that we could take the pads anywhere, place them down and he would pee on them.
Border Terrier Basics
From the front door, we have stairs which lead up to everything. The problem is that we have a baby gate at the top of the stairs which stops accessibility to the front door. To be honest, it only took about a week and a half until Ralphy was telling us when he needed out. We were up 3 flights of stairs and relied too much on the puppy pads.
To me, a good owner is someone that can see their own mistakes and learn from them. My advice is not to bring up dogs in flats, unless you have easy access to a garden. Toilet training a dog properly is an important part of being a dog.
Other dogs can so beneficial in teaching yours what being a dog is all about. Spending time with Mac and Glenn definitely taught Ralphy that doing a toilet outside is what to do. He used to sometimes copy them but you knew he was torn as he still thought that the pads were the right thing to do, again, my fault. I think moving house and removing the pads all together sealed the deal for him and he finally came round to the realisation that his uncles were right all along, which is most likely why he picked it up so quickly.

Owners must realize, however, that three or more dogs equal a pack, and all packs establish a leader. It is certainly not unheard of that pack-behavior problems can arise, and sometimes the only answer is to re-home the instigator, which can include this breed.
